“I am beautiful too!”The room went silent as the small boy exclaimed his statement rather loudly. The group of tiny girls began a fit of giggles. The flustered boy's frustration became quite obvious when he continued to push forward his point.
“Why can't I be pretty? I-I-” his train of thought moved too quickly as the kids laughed harder. “I have brown hair with bits of sunshine hidden inside! Water falls from my eyes when I get a booboo! My cheeks become red when the wind blows too cold. I dress and get bathed. I even have a name! Just like all of you! So why can't I be beautiful too?”
Glimpses of confusion spread quickly from face to face of the girls. The girl with murky brown hair that fell just above her shoulders stepped forward. “Cause you're a boy!” The word boy dragged out and seemed to curl in the air.
“Also boys don't play with dolls! And Ken's a'pose to be with Barbie, not Keith!” Another girl's voice broke through as she took the small doll from the boy's hands.
“But can I still be pretty?” The boys questioning eyes started to shimmer.
“No!” the girls whined out in unison then shifted into joyous laughter.
The boy didn't get angry, instead he exaggerated his movements. Puffed out his chest, stood on his toes, and forced a smile. Then the boy with sunshine hidden in his hair stormed away, leaving the girls abruptly baffled.
“They were just jealous they don't see beauty my way.” he whispered.
